Wild Camping on the parking area of the ski hotel.
We asked to stay for the night and were welcome to park in front of the hotel.
There is WiFi from the hotel available.
This is a good spot just after the border when entering Chile. The boder check was very intense and they took several things away. However, they have been kind with some other items, which they let us.
Both the border controls for Chile exit and entering Argentina are only after the tunnel or pass Cristo Redentor.

Secured parking of the Autopista Service company.
After an accident on the busy COPEC parking lot, we moved here. It is secured and no public traffic.
They have an publicparking area with toilets as well. But we parked in the backyard.
However, as the COPEC station is just next door, their services (e.g. WiFi) are available as well if you like to walk in there.

Wild camp on a small private road.
We were stranded by an wrong address we have been given, but found the place and the people too kind and asked to stay overnight.
It is a dusty road but very little to no traffic.
No infrastructure and the workers arrive early in the morning, causing some traffic noise.

Wild Camping on a dead end road in an industrial area. The street has a nice little green strip an a walking path on each side where we sit.
Traffic noise is only little from the nearby autopista.
No infrastructure. Good distance spot if you have to return back into town.
In this street there is the company VigaFlow, who distribute and sell water filters.

08 Tongoy Beach
Wild Camping at Tongoy Beach.
Just beside several organized camp sites, which are already closed at this time of the season. Otherwise it might be a problem to camp at the beach, as it is officially not allowed.
There is a little too much litter at the beach to be perfectly pretty.
The beach 'starts' here and you can walk along the quite and wide beach many kilometers.
With some luck, pelicans will pass by and flying low over the water.
The ocean is a bit cold when taking a swim, but nice.

12 Observatorio Mamalluca
Camp on th eparking of the Mamalluca observatory.
After the visitor tour we were allowed to park on the parking lot until next day. But ask beforehand at the ticket office to organize and get permission to avoid any hassel.
The ground is a bit slopy, but for one night okay and even better than to drive down to valley in dark. Anyway, the road is a bit narrow for big trucks and many trees needs to get passed. Better access than the sign on 41CH is at S 30,02969° W 70,67403° and then turn left in the village!!! This is the posted route for busses when coming from Mamalluca.
There are toilets in the observatory but they are closed after the tour.
The tour was very busy with three groups of about 20 people each, causing some waiting time between the individual observations.
We only heard about much more personal tours at the Cruze del Sur observatory, which we would probably try next time.

20 Taltal
Wild camping at the pacific coast well off the Ruta 1.
The road in this area is most often very close to the coast, hence few spots which are away from the road. This peninsula is well off the road and provides several opportunities to hide between nice rocks. Becuase of the recent rainfall, there are currently lots of flourish flowers. A nery nice place.
Only if you go down to the beach there is litter around and not very pleasing. But between the rocks it is very nice and you hardly hear any cars from the road nor too much of the swell from the sea.
The access track is usually for cars and a bit narrow with some sharp rocks at the side. But if you carefully drive down, even bigger trucks will make it here.

Wild camping beside the old road.
The B-70 is closed after it has been washed away with the last flooding a few weeks ago. So we have to re-plan our route forward.
There is a good leveled spot to park here and good view over the ocean. Not too much spray or humidity as it is high on the shore and away from the sea.
There is nearly no traffic on the road along the coast. It has been rebuild and prepared after the rainfall but some parts still sandy and bumpy. Only the first bit after Paposo is a pretty well established piste.

There are very few spots in Antofagasta and the town is not looking very inviting to stay overnight, so we moved out of town to the beach at Isla de Santa Maria. The island protects from the high waves and has a lot of birds here. However, it is a windy beach.
The road is paved up to the shore and then it continues as piste either north and south bound.
We parked just off the piste.
Solid ground to drive the beach/shore.

Wild Camping in the Salar de Atacama.
Most of the side of the road is blocked to leave the road as all the field is utilised for industrial purposes.
We camped in a field where they have digged the material to build the roads. But be carefull, the ground can be very soft if there is any little water in the ground.
No infrastructure but pretty quite from the road. Only noise is from some generators of the industrial plants, but not too noisy.
No infrastructure. 6°C at night in May.

We camped at the parking lot next to the geyser, so you are onsite for the daily erruption in the morning.
The piste from San Pedro de Atacama is pretty good, no washboard, only some washouts in driving direction.
You may want to drive slowly anyway as there are nice spots to see along the scenic way.
The parking ground is okay. The pool water temperature is not really high. Changing rooms available if you want to take a bath. In the afternoon and evening it is very quiet.
Toilets are at the visitor center.
Entry to the park is 5.000 Pesos/person.

31 Calama
An somehoe 'emergency spot' as we were heading out of town late afternoon and there are no many hide-away spots around.
Not pretty but okay for a night under current conditions.
However, next time I woud consider a campground in town or head south-bound to look for a camp-spot.

34 San Pedro de Atacama - Valle de la Luna
Wild camping close to the viewing platform into the Valle de la Luna.
As it is no longer allowed to camp on the parking of the viewing platform, this is a close by location as an alternative. From here you look into the valle de la morte and therefore lots of tourists come here as well. The last may only leave after sunset.
We parked in a distance to the view point to avoid having the tourists around the truck.
The road up here is a bit rocky and you may only get here slowly. But it is manageable.
Access from CH23 is at S 22,90959° W 68,25121°.
Very quite at night.
The light into the valle de la morte is best in the mornig (instead of the evening light)
Altitude: 2.656m
